Klavierquintett A-Dur op. 81 (Klavírní kvintet A dur op. 81): Partitur und Stimmen (German Edition)

The Piano Quintet in A major op. 81 was written in 1887 during some productive weeks in Vysoká, the summer home of Dvo ák, when the composer had already achieved international success and had five trips to England behind him. Dvo ák had already written a quintet (also with two violins) in the summer of 1872, and so the Piano Quintet op. 81 is his second composition in this key and composition. The Opus 81 has long been one of the internationally most performed chamber music works and owes its fame, as it is already in a critique of the premiere in January 1888, its fresh thematic material and the impressive depth of the processing. It is not possible to prefer one sentence over the other, for the fiery Allegro and the poetic Dumka are as much in the lead as the impetuous Furiant and the happy finale. That Dvo ák's piece makes a beautiful sound impression and contains interesting and original instrumental effects of large numbers, is undoubted. The present edition is based on the complete edition of the works Antonín Dvo áks. The main source was the first edition of Simrock published in 1888, which was created with the collaboration of the composer and was closely compared with the autograph. Dvorak: Piano Quartets Nos. 1 & 2

Antonín Dvorák had a passion for chamber music; he liked playing it with friends, and perhaps soon came to realize how good a commercial commodity such pieces represented. He wrote the first of his two piano quartets at the age of 34, by which time many a publisher was interested in his works. The Czech media voiced their satisfaction that Dvorák had moved beyond foreign influence, with the Slavic spirit having prevailed in his music. Cases in point include his Moravian Duets, Op. 20, and Serenades, Op. 22, created at the same time. The publisher Fritz Simrock bitterly regretted having rejected the first quartet, persistently reminding the composer: I would gladly take a piano quartet, preferably even two. When in the summer of 1889 Dvorák got down to writing his second quartet, he complained of having a slow hand, yet stressed that he had plenty of ideas: My head is full of it ... I have finished three movements of a new quartet with piano, and the finale will be ready in a few days. It has gone smoothly beyond expectation, with the melodies rolling in to me. The sheer beauty of the piece was cogently described by the prominent Vienna-based critic Eduard Hanslick: The quartet requires that the listener be considerably attentive and well informed, which, however, really pays ...
